Can you have Coronavirus (COVID-19) without a fever?
Influenza is a common symptom of coronavirus 19 (COVID-19). However, some people with this condition do not have a fever. A person may have different symptoms or none at all.
According to an April 2020 study, approximately 55.5% of people with COVID-19 developed the flu. This suggests that a large number of people with the disease do not have this symptom.
In this article, we look at the symptoms of COVID-19, how common they are, and what to do if symptoms appear.
What are the symptoms of COVID-19?
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), common symptoms of COVID-19 include:
the flu
Cold
cough
breathing hard
fatigue
muscle pain
head
new loss of taste or smell
curved or congested nose
sore throat
nausea or vomiting
diarrhea
Anyone can get the disease, and its symptoms can be mild, moderate, or severe.
Also, COVID-19 can affect people differently, and some have other symptoms, which are very rare.
A similar study that identified the flu in only 55.5% of participants with certified COVID-19 also found that symptoms such as dry cough were not global. The following table shows how many of the 202 study participants received each mark:
Symbols Spread (%)
Fatigue 68.3
Disorders of smell and taste 64.4
Dry or productive cough. 60.4
Influenza 55.5
Muscle or joint pain 44.6
Headache 42.6
Respiratory problems 41.1
Sore throat 31.2
Some studies have yielded mixed results. A July 2020 study, for example, found that 51.2% of participants with COVID-19 certified had the flu.
A separate study since April found that of the 57,000 million COVID-19 certified, only 30.7% of people had a fever at the hospital.
These statistics show that most people have COVID-19 without the flu. In addition, according to a March 2020 report from the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 80% of people with COVID-19 experience mild or nonexistent symptoms.
What are the early symptoms?
COVID-19 affects people in different ways, and can have a variety of early symptoms.
However, in a study conducted in August 2020, a team of scientists suggested that humans develop the symptoms of COVID-19 as follows:
the flu
muscle pain and dry cough
vomiting, nausea, or both
diarrhea
This suggests that among people who have the flu, it may be one of the first symptoms. However, proving that this sign order is accurate will require further studies.
COVID-19 is a SARS-CoV-2 infection - and according to the WHO, symptoms of the disease can take up to 14 days to develop after a person has been infected with the virus.
What to do if symptoms appear
People with mild symptoms that could indicate COVID-19 should stay home and isolate themselves from other family members, if possible. CDC advises:
using a separate bedroom or bathroom
to avoid contact with relatives or pets
non-sharing personal items, such as cuts, glasses, bedding, or towels
wearing a mask where separation or physical distance does not occur
Anyone with symptoms should call a doctor for advice on what to do next. It is important to mention any critical conditions, as this may increase the chances of COVID-19 symptoms being established.
When can you seek emergency help?
Most people who develop COVID-19 have fewer symptoms and get better without treatment. However, if the symptoms are severe or seem to worsen immediately, call 911 or seek emergency medical help.
Warning signs include:
chest pain or pressure
breathing hard
shortness of breath
blue lips, fingers or toes, or skin
you have trouble waking up or staying awake
new confusion
Do not visit a medical facility without first calling and informing staff that COVID-19 is possible.
Prevention
The best way to reduce the chances of getting a contract with SARS-CoV-2 is to prevent a transfer. CDC recommends:
Hand washing: Wash hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds. Or, when bath water is not available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol. This is very important:
before touching the face, eyes, nose, or mouth
before preparing and eating food
after touching used tissues, masks, gloves, or other protective equipment
after leaving the public place
after using the toilet or handling a used nappy
after snoring, sneezing, or coughing
after touching the animals
after caring for a sick or potentially infected person
Cough coughing and sneezing: Coughing or sneezing of the tissues or the inside of the elbow limits the amount of breath that enters the air. Discard used tissue in selected bins and wash hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards.
Physical isolation: Avoiding close contact with others reduces the risk of exposure to respiratory infections that may contain SARS-CoV-2. Sit on six feet, or 2 feet, away from others, especially in public or near people who may be ill.
Increase cleaning and disinfection: Clean surfaces and utensils with soap and water before using a household disinfectant. This includes things like:
door handles, handles and keys
taps and sinks
light change
drawer handles
cell phones and tablets
keyboards and goats
tables and desks
Wear a mask: A person can transmit SARS-CoV-2 even if they do not feel sick. Wearing a mask over your mouth and nose when you are around people outside the house reduces the chances of this happening.
The CDC recommends that people wear cloth masks in public places where it is difficult to keep physically apart. This will help reduce the spread of the virus from people who do not know they have it, including those with asymptomatic. People should wear face masks while continuing to exercise. Instructions for making masks at home are available here.. Note: It is important that N95 surgical and respiratory masks are kept for health workers.
Summary
While the flu is often associated with COVID-19, most people can get sick but not have a fever.
It is noteworthy that when people experience symptoms of COVID-19, they tend to be mild. Anyone with these symptoms should take steps to isolate themselves and call a doctor for advice.
